Overnight change takes ten years...​

Our journey to this moment has been long.  Many things had to happen for the movement to recognize a fundamental shift. The strategic partnership between PowerPAC and ONYX placed us at the epicenter of a decade-long evolution in American politics.

​

PHASE 1 – BUILDING THE FOUNDATION

 

• 2007-2008: Working with Steve Phillips and Ben Jealous, PowerPAC spearheaded the nation's first SuperPAC (Vote Hope), opposing then Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton to fund early primary states for Obama. That coalition worked, and the rest is history.

• 2010: They backed California Attorney General candidate Kamala Harris against the usual white male Democratic stalwarts to make it through winning her primary and the general election – battling the Koch brothers along the way.

 

• 2010-2018: Aligned with Stacey Abrams from the inception of nearly a decade of organizing in Georgia. This landmark campaign laid the foundation for turning Georgia from red to blue, changing the very mathematics of winning. It culminated in Abrams' historic 2018 nomination, defeating establishment candidate Stacey Evans 77% to 23%.

PHASE 2 – EXPANDING THE FOOTPRINT

• Powerful Alliances: Our PowerPAC partnership was beginning to yield fruit. Evidence flooded in that this strategy had worked – with unexpected candidates in unlikely Southern states. So we went to work.

• Strategic Wins: We helped push Ben Jealous across the finish line in his Maryland Gubernatorial primary. Backed Andrew Gillum to win his Florida Primary.

• Proof of Concept: Built a campaign that helped Mike Espy win his US Senate Primary, bringing him within striking distance in the midterm. Culminating in that historic moment: Dec of 2017 when ruby red Alabama turned blue.

• Setting the Stage: These cumulative lessons – from losses, successes, and incremental wins – set the stage for historic US Senate victories in Alabama, and then Georgia.​​

PHASE 3 – DEFYING THE ODDS

​

• December 2017: We ran one of several IEs supported and orchestrated by Black Women – the #HiddenFigures Doug Jones should still be thanking for his Alabama US Senate victory. The legendary DeJuana Thompson (ThinkRubix), Adrianne Shropshire (BlackPAC), LaTosha Brown and Cliff Albright (Black Voters Matter).

• The Blueprint: That December 2017 Alabama miracle was the result of a coordinated set of IEs these women and their unstoppable organizations ran. Driving Black turnout to Obama levels – in an election two weeks before Christmas.

​

• 2018: That momentum brought Stacey Abrams within 55,000 votes of winning the Georgia Governor's mansion, despite widely publicized voter suppression – registration purges and poll closures in minority communities – by her opponent, who was Secretary of State at the time.

​

• 2020-2010: Three years later Georgia proved everyone wrong. Making history by electing Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to US Senate. Defying the odds and flipping Georgia from red to blue.
